Your bat is made of English Willow which is a natural material and will continually have very hard cricket balls smashing against it. Most bats will eventually conk out or break and you can never predict when this will happen, it could be the very first ball you play with it or it may not break for ten years, you can never put a life on a cricket bat. 

Knocking in is the process of hardening and conditioning the blade's surface in readiness for the impact that it will endure. 

The best action that you can take to HELP LESSEN the chance of your bat breaking, particularly early in its life, is to prepare your bat correctly.

We have one of only a few purpose built machines (in Australia) which have been designed and made to save time and effort in completing a precise job of knocking in the face of your cricket bat. 

(If you decide to manually knock your bat in yourself we suggest a solid 6 – 8 hours of preparation time)

The two main reasons for knocking in are: 

It protects the bat from cracking as well as increasing its usable life. 

It also improves the middle (the area with best rebound quality) of the bat so that the middle is bigger and better. 

The nature of the game of cricket is that a hard ball is propelled at high speed toward the batsman who swings the bat in the attempt of hitting the ball, this contact will cause an insufficiently prepared bat to crack very quickly and therefore shortening the bats life span.

The price of a bat does not have any effect on whether or not it cracks, usually the best bats are more expensive and are more likely to crack  than a cheaper bat because the willow is often softer. 

Cricket bats are made of willow and it is to be expected that the condition of the bat will deteriorate during its usage.
